Reading Dogs

Next week, Kites class children will be given a reading dog bookmark so the adults who read with them can ask them a range of questions to deepen their child’s understanding of the books they are reading.

The children are used to these types of questions in Guided Reading but further practice at home would be extremely beneficial.

Fractions!

Over the last week, Kites have been learning about fractions including finding fractions that are the same as one another. By using the concrete resources available to them, the children were able to physically compare fractions sizes to find fractions that were the same – equivalent fractions.

The children have learnt that the top number in the fraction is the numerator and that tells us how many parts we are looking at specifically (they are normally shaded) and the denominator is the bottom number and it tells us how many parts there are altogether.

Fractions exist in all of our lives and it’s important that the children feel comfortable with using them and explaining their purpose.

So ask your your child about fractions and see if they can spot some fractions in their own lives. How many red cars in the car park and how many cars altogether? How many chocolate chip  biscuits in the biscuit tin and how many biscuits altogether?

Crafty Critters

During our latest topic, Kites class have been constructing recycled sculptures as part of their art project. The children were inspired by the work of Robert Bradford and have worked in table groups to create sculptures of a shark, orca, sea lion, sea turtle and crab. The adults took a step back to allow the children to work in teams to make creative choices, problem solve, evaluate the successfulness of their team choices and reflect upon their group’s successes and creative experiments. The children have developed their communication skills and have a deeper understanding of their table group’s dynamic and have also produced some fantastic looking sculptures!

Art project

Puffins have been busy over the last few weeks creating sculptures of sea animals based around the work of the artist Robert Bradord. The sculptures are nearing completion and the children can’t wait to share their creations with you in the family assembly.

Active time

Year 4 have continued to develop their skills in tennis. This week we focused on the ready position and moving each other around the court. We also took it in turns to officiate and become more familiar with the rules and scoring system.

Active R.E

This week, Kites enjoyed a session of Active R.E in which they learnt about The Holy Trinity and how we can be a Creator, a Saviour and a Helper in our own lives.

The children were asked to create a game in 2 minutes using a hoop, some tennis balls, some comes and some bibs! All of the games were different and imaginative and the groups worked well together.

The children were given a choice to save a child or save themselves during a game of cone throwing.

And finally, the children paired up and had to guide their blindfolded partners through a minefield of cones using only their voice.

So when you talk to your child about R.E ask them who the Creator, the Saviour and the Helper are and how they can  be a creator, a saviour or a helper in their own lives.

Forest School – Rubbish Audit

Kites were in the playground today for Forest School. The children created a rubbish tally chart on their white boards with their partners. The children were surprised by what they found!

The children suggested ways to reduce the litter on the playground:

A litter pick

No littering signs

Raising awareness through assemblies

Educating their fellow Coopers Edge children about rubbish and recycling with posters and campaigns.
